The Right Stuffs

Eat the right foods.

We read that line everywhere. Heck, the “go, grow and glow” stuff was even the first lesson we had way back in 1st grade Science class.

Unfortunately, most of the healthiest foods are not friendly to the palate.  I should know, because I am immensely picky when it comes to foods.  In fact, I’m too picky that I almost end up with nothing nutritious on my plate.  Yeah, I know this sucks.  So from this day on, I will try – really try – to eat nothing but HEALTHY edibles such as:

1.      Oats:  Did you know that the b-glucan in whole oats reduces the risk of heart disease?  Its soluble fiber is important in lowering cholesterol and stabilizing blood sugars.

2.      Soybeans:  Who likes soybeans?! Ick.  Yet, the bioactive ingredients in soy protein products suppress the formation of blood vessels that help generate cancer cells. It also stabilizes hormone levels in women, as well as decrease the risk of heart disease, osteoporosis and ovarian, breast, and prostate cancers.

3.      Garlic:  Dracula is gonna love this one.  Garlic is actually rich in allicin, which boosts immune function and reduces cancer risk. It also has strong anti-viral effects and can lower cholesterol levels. 

4.      Grapes:  Here’s a fact.  Grape skins actually contain a high concentration of resveratrol.  Resta--- errr, resveratrol, can block the formation of coronary artery plaque, as well as tumor formation and growth. 

5.      Cruciferous Vegetables:  These, my clueless ones, include broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower and brussels sprouts. These contain includes, sulforaphane, and isothiocyanates, which protect cells from damage by carcinogens, block tumor formation, and help the liver to inactivate hormone-like compounds that may promote cancer.
